Tankless Water Heater Installation

Endless hot water and a wall-mounted unit instead of a tank taking up floor space. The part people underestimate is the gas sizing and venting that has to come with it.

Most of the Job Is Not the Unit

Mounting a tankless heater on a wall is the straightforward part. The work that determines whether you are happy with it is everything else: sizing it against your real peak demand and winter inlet temperature, confirming the gas supply can actually feed it, and routing dedicated venting.

That is also where corner-cutting shows up. An undersized unit or an inadequate gas supply produces exactly the complaints people blame the technology for.

  • ✓Sized against real demand — peak simultaneous use and winter inlet temperature.
  • ✓Gas line assessed and upgraded — priced in the quote, not discovered on the day.
  • ✓Dedicated venting installed — concentric venting, properly routed.
  • ✓Permit handled — pulled and inspected as part of the job.
  • ✓FortisBC rebate completed — we do the paperwork.

FAQs

Tankless Installation Questions

It depends on the flow rate the unit is rated for against your peak simultaneous demand, and on how cold the incoming water is — which in Metro Vancouver in winter is genuinely cold and reduces output. This is the single most important part of specifying a tankless system, and getting it wrong is how people end up disappointed. We size against real peak demand, not a brochure figure.
Often, yes. A tankless unit fires at a much higher BTU rate than a tank when demand is called, and many existing gas supplies were never sized for that. We assess the gas line as part of the quote and include any required upgrade in the price rather than discovering it on installation day.
Tankless units need their own dedicated venting, usually concentric, and they cannot share the old tank flue. Where the unit can be mounted is largely determined by where that venting can practically run, which is why we look at the space before quoting rather than after.
More up front, because of the unit, the gas sizing and the venting. The return comes from lower running costs, longer service life — often twenty years against eight to twelve for a tank — and the floor space you get back. Whether it pays off for you depends on how long you are staying and how much hot water you use.
FortisBC offers rebates on qualifying tankless models. Amounts change, we keep track of what is current, and we complete the application as part of the installation.
