Laundry Drain Cleaning

A washing machine dumps its drum faster than almost anything else in the house. A laundry drain that is even slightly restricted will cope until it suddenly does not.

It Only Fails on the Spin Cycle

Laundry drains are deceptive. The pipe restricts gradually with lint and detergent residue, and for months nothing happens — because the only time it is genuinely tested is the few seconds when the machine empties its drum.

Then one day the standpipe cannot take it fast enough and you have water across the floor. Clearing the line and scouring the build-up off the pipe wall restores the capacity that was quietly disappearing.

  • ✓Standpipes and laundry tubs — both, since they usually share a branch.
  • ✓Lint and detergent build-up removed — scoured off the wall, not punched through.
  • ✓Discharge hose and trap checked — a clogged lint trap causes the same symptom for far less money.
  • ✓Interaction with other fixtures checked — if flushing affects the laundry drain, the problem is further down.

Laundry Drain Questions

Because a washing machine discharges in a fast burst, and a partly restricted pipe can handle a slow trickle but not a full drum arriving at once. That is why it seems intermittent — it is not, the restriction is always there, it just only matters on the spin cycle.
Lint, mostly, bound together with detergent residue and fabric softener. It builds on the pipe wall the same way grease does in a kitchen line. Older laundry tubs also collect grit from whatever gets rinsed in them.
A lint trap on the discharge hose helps and is cheap. Clean or replace it regularly — a clogged one causes its own drainage problem, which is a common false alarm.
Usually yes — the tub and the standpipe normally share a branch, so a restriction downstream affects both. If only the tub is slow, it is more likely its own trap.
That is a bigger signal. Two fixtures interacting means the blockage is in the line they share or in the main. Worth a proper look rather than clearing the laundry drain again. More on main sewer lines.

Laundry Drain Overflowing?

Cleared properly, with the lint and detergent build-up actually removed.
