Bathroom Drain Cleaning

Hair and soap, almost every time. The exception is when several bathroom fixtures go slow together — that is a different problem and worth treating as one.

Water draining in a bathroom basin
Bathroom Drains

Usually Hair. Occasionally Something Else.

Bathroom drains are the simplest blockages in the house and the easiest to prevent. Hair and soap bind into a mat at the pop-up or the strainer, water slows, and eventually it stops.

What we pay attention to is whether it is only that fixture. One slow shower is a shower problem. A slow shower, a slow basin and a toilet that empties lazily is a branch or main-line problem wearing a disguise.

  • ✓Pop-ups and strainers cleared — the cheapest fix there is, and we will tell you if that is all it was.
  • ✓Cabled past the trap — where the blockage is further along.
  • ✓Whole-bathroom check — we run the other fixtures to see whether it is really just the one.
  • ✓Toilets too — including traps blocked by wipes.

Bathroom Drain Questions

Hair bound together with soap scum, in the overwhelming majority of cases. It collects at the pop-up, the strainer or the trap and builds into a mat that water struggles past. Wipes are the other big one — including the ones labelled flushable, which do not break down like toilet paper does.
Often, yes. Pull the pop-up out of the basin or lift the strainer in the shower and clear the hair you find. That fixes a slow bathroom drain more often than people expect, and it costs nothing. If it is still slow after that, the blockage is past the trap and needs a cable.
That the problem is not in any of them. When the basin, the tub and the toilet are all sluggish, the blockage is in the branch they share or in the main line. That needs looking at properly rather than clearing one fixture and hoping.
It means air is being pulled or displaced past a restriction. Sometimes that is a partial blockage; sometimes it is a venting problem. Either way it is the system telling you something, and it is worth a look before it becomes a backup.
Usually a dry trap — a fixture that has not been used in a while lets its water seal evaporate, so sewer gas comes back up. Run the tap for a minute. If the smell persists with the trap full, that is a different issue and worth investigating.
